How To: Trigger a Stripe Migration
This article walks through moving a customer's subscriptions from Stripe to Measure. You'll enable Stripe sync, review the mirrored subscriptions, and switch billing over one customer at a time.
1. Enable Stripe Sync
Email [email protected] to enable Stripe sync on your account. Support triggers the Stripe account import, which pulls your existing Stripe customers and subscriptions into Measure.
What to Know Before You Sync
If your app provisions licenses or entitlements from Stripe webhooks, review these points before you enable the sync.
Webhooks. Measure doesn't send any webhooks for mirrored customers or subscriptions during the Stripe import. This avoids duplicate events on your side while the same customer still exists in both systems.
Customer identifier. A synced customer's identifier in Measure is set to the same value as their Stripe customer ID. Any code that refers to the old Stripe ID keeps working without a database migration on your end.
Price and product. A mirrored subscription keeps the price and product synced from Stripe. When you start managing the customer, you can switch the subscription to an equivalent price in your Measure price book, then archive the Stripe product.
Rolling back a flip. Measure doesn't natively support rolling back a flip through the API or dashboard. By the time you flip a customer, Measure may have already issued an invoice, and that invoice may have synced to your accounting platform. If you need to fix a one-off customer during implementation, contact support for help.
2. Review Mirrored Subscriptions
Once the sync completes, the subscriptions pulled in from Stripe show up in Measure marked as mirrored. A mirrored subscription reflects what's currently active in Stripe. It gives you a chance to review what's coming over before you switch billing to Measure for that customer.
3. Start Managing the Customer in Measure
When you're ready to move a customer over, start managing them in Measure. You can do this two ways:
Click the button in the UI on the customer's mirrored subscription.
Call the Start Managing Customer endpoint from the API: https://docs.getmeasure.com/api-references/customers/start-managing-customer
When this succeeds, Measure generates the customer's next invoice and the matching Stripe subscription moves to Draft.
4. Cancel the Stripe Subscription
Once you've moved over everything you need for that customer, cancel the Stripe subscription. Measure now owns billing for that customer going forward.
